How to give yourself a Stress-Busting Facial Massage:
Start by applying a moisturizer, cream, or essential oil such as lavender to your face…
1. Begin at the cheeks. Use your fingers or knuckles to draw big circles around your cheeks, be sure to always push the skin upward.
2. Using upward strokes, firmly rub the skin from the mid jaw to the cheekbone. Apply pressure to the cheekbones for a few seconds.
3. Massage smile lines by starting from the corners of the mouth and ending at the corners of the nose.
4. Using your fingertips, apply pressure to the brow bones to lift and open the eyes. Apply light pressure around the eye sockets and out to the temples and up to the forehead.
5. To plump lips, use forefinger and thumb to pinch upper and lower lips to stimulate blood flow.
6. To end, drain lymphatic fluid from the face to the collarbone. Place fingertips under the eyes on either side of the bridge of your nose. Gently apply pressure in a long flowing motion across the under eye area to the temples, down the side of face (along sideburns), and down the neck to the collarbone.
Foot reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to areas of the feet, using specific hand techniques, to relieve ailments and keep the body aligned and balanced.
Japanese reflexology is a derivative of Chinese reflexology with only a few modifications. Japanese reflexology differs from massage in that it works to activate nerve endings whereas massage is pressure applied to the body’s soft tissues and muscles.
With reflexology, areas of the foot are mapped out to correspond to certain organs and bodily functioning. Trained massage therapists apply precise pressure to these areas together with specific and correlating hand movements. As a result, the entire body will feel rejuvenated and awake.
Upon stimulating the nerve endings in your feet, the corresponding body parts get stimulated too. Some opt for “walking reflexology” by wearing sandals with stones, rubber prongs, or wooden pegs. These sandals can be worn for as little or as long as possible to stimulate and massage nerve endings in the feet.
Though reflexology sandals are a convenient way to wake up your feet, it doesn’t compare to the precision and relief a skilled therapist provides during a foot reflexology session.

In Japanese SHIATSU means “finger pressure” (“shi” means finger and “atsu” means pressure).
During a shiatsu massage treatment, therapists apply varied, rhythmic pressure across precise points along the body, while rotating and stretching limbs and joints.
These points are called acupressure, or meridian, points and correlate to specific organs and body systems. By applying pressure to these points, shiatsu massage aims to remove any energetic blockages to alleviate pain and discomfort.
These blockages disrupt the body’s vital energy balance, or ki. Stimulating ki jump starts the body’s natural healing mechanism to eliminate fatigue, improve blood flow, fortify the immune system, and promote overall well-being.

Tips for an optimal shiatsu massage treatment:
- Avoid heavy meals beforehand.

Tension headaches have any number of causes from dehydration, skipping meals, to being over caffeinated or stressed out.
Aromatherapy may be a good alternative to medication and can stop a tension headache in its tracks. You can engage in aromatherapy one of three ways: cosmetics (applying essential oils to yourself by way of body or skincare products), massage, or inhalation.
Put a few drops of your favorite soothing essential oil on a cotton ball and place under nose and inhale deeply. Examples of soothing oils are:
- Sweet marjoram
Or apply a few drops into a bowl of hot steaming water and place your nose near the steam.
Here are some other soothing ways to ward off headaches:
- Steep herbs like lavender, peppermint, rosemary, sage, or chamomile in boiling water for 20min. Soak a cloth in the infused water then place on forehead.
- For a cold compress version, chill the soaked cloth in the refrigerator or freezer until it reaches desired coolness.
- Steep herbs in bath water for a relaxing and aromatic bath.

Detox is the term given to the body’s natural ability to rid itself of toxins and impurities. Everybody can benefit from a detox regimen every now and then. Some even claim detox’ing on a regular basis helps with weight loss, cellulite reduction, and an increase of energy.
Here are some DIY detox tips from our senior Licensed Massage Therapist, Gary Bergman, to help you feel your very best this summer:
Toxins like acid, waste products, enzymes, and proteins that remain in the blood can, due to gravity, settle like sediment in the feet. Many motor nerves also end in the feet, so by giving your feet some extra special attention once in a while, you’ll be able to increase mobility and blood circulation, thereby lowering blood pressure and increasing immunity–ain’t detox great?
1. Soak your feet in hot water with Epsom or any kind of bath salts. At the end of a long day after walking around in strappy sandals or shoes without much support, a 15-20 min. foot soak will really do the whole body good. The salt will help draw out uric acid build up in the muscles around the feet and ankles and will also give you a quick magnesium boost.
2. Massage the bottoms of your feet with a golf or racket ball by moving your foot in a circular motion for about two minutes at a time while standing or sitting. Be sure to move the ball along the arch and ball of the foot. This will break up any tightness and loosen tendons, as well as contribute to foot flexibility. Flexible feet will also keep joints loose decreasing the possibility of bad sprains.
3. Flush out toxins naturally by drinking plenty of water. I know we hear this all the time, but without proper hydration the body has a harder time flushing out impurities. Some people love fizzy or sparkling water but it isn’t as hydrating as good ole H2O. If you drink sparkling this summer, I suggest adding a little juice or fresh fruit to it to increase its hydrating capacity.
Just remember: when in doubt, flush it out!

1. Take short break every 30 minutes to stretch your neck and shoulders. This will help keep your body limber.

3. Check your posture regularly. Roll your shoulders back, and sit in such a way where your knees are at right angles with both feet comfortably resting flat on the floor.

Why Prioritizing Self Care Matters
So you’ve made a fabulous list of resolutions this year- GREAT! but some may be asking, “How do I actually make it happen?” The USC School of Social Work explains that most don’t follow through with their plans after three months (see infographic below), especially if self care isn’t a priority.
Mari Miyoshi, an occupational therapist and director of the Brain Gym Learning Center NYC, shares how prioritizing self-care can propel you to accomplish more things faster:
“Ensure you participate in activities weekly that bring you ease, and help you relax. By making this a priority, your brain’s electro-chemical activity enhances, allowing you to release stress, rest better and have more energy left over to take on new challenges.
Prioritizing self-care means ensuring you are taking necessary steps to limit the amount of stress (whether it’s emotional, mental, physical, etc.) you feel on a daily basis. As you take conscious steps towards fulfilling your resolutions, the fear of change will quickly turn into the exhilaration you feel after you’ve tried something new.”

Uplifting and relaxing, it can be used as a purification agent in skin cleansing, taken internally to soothe indigestion or as a home deodorizer.
For pain and insomnia relief, and it can be helpful for balancing hormones. Should be used topically on the skin.
Relaxing, soothing to muscle aches. People often drink chamomile tea for the same reason, but you can drop this essential oil in a cup of hot water or apply it topically to your skin.
Stimulating and uplifting. Taken internally, it helps to promote good digestion and immune health.
Used as an antiseptic, this is my family’s secret weapon against canker sores. Simply swill a mouthful of water plus a drop or two of myrrh in your mouth for 30 seconds twice daily and watch them disappear!
