Celebrated Anti-Aging Facial in New York City: The Geisha Facial®

The Business Standard

India’s newspaper, The Business Standard, reports on the efficacy of Anti-Aging Facials and touts Shizuka new york’s The Geisha Facial® in their article titled: Anti-Aging Facials can Save you from Losing that Youthful Appearance.

“Manhattan’s Shizuka New York Day Spa specializes in the Nightingale facial in which bird droppings, which removes dead cells, are slathered onto a client’s face to give a youthful appearance.”

With a wide range of facials and treatments available to choose from, Shizuka Bernstein advises on the best time to receive an anti-aging facial:

“Basically, anti-aging facials are unnecessary before the age of 25. These treatments are most effective once the skin begins to age, which is generally in someone’s 30′s (depending on their lifestyle, genetics, etc.). With that said, it’s never too late to begin an anti-aging regimen.”

Shizuka’s BeautyZen Corner: Geisha Beauty Secrets

Shizuka's BeautyZen Corner

For centuries, geishas’ beauty has been likened to their mysteriously flawless skin.  Geisha beauty secrets reveal that simple ingredients native to Japan like rice bran, camellia oil, and green tea work together to protect, nourish, and brighten skin. These and other ingredients create the cornerstone of time-honored geisha beauty.

Geisha Beauty Secrets

Many describe geisha’s skin as mochi-hada or baby skin because it resembles skin so soft and flawless like a baby’s. The secret to their flawless skin attributes back to their skincare routine that’s been passed down for centuries.

At one time, the heavy makeup worn by geishas contained harsh chemicals like lead and zinc which led to severe skin problems. Eventually, they discovered nightingale droppings as a natural way to not only remove the makeup but to retexturize and strengthen the bonds of the skin at a cellular level.

Traditional Skincare: Simple Ingredients

After Shizuka learned that geishas used simple ingredients easily sourced throughout Japan to care for their skin, she carefully studied the effects of these ingredients along with her husband, the dermatologist, Dr. Robert Bernstein. From their findings, Shizuka created The Geisha Facial® , which incorporates simple Japanese ingredients like rice bran, camellia oil, green tea, and  uguisi no fun or nightingale droppings.

Deep Cleansing Facial

Since ancient times the enzymes from nightingale droppings proved to deeply cleanse and lift away harsh chemicals from the skin leaving it renewed and dewy each time. (Think of it like an enzyme peel). By mixing the droppings proportionally with powdery rice bran, Shizuka created a fine enzyme exfoliate that’s been lauded the world over.

Father-Daughter-Spa-Day with The Classic Men’s & Geisha Facial®

The Daily Cookie

A father and daughter team from The Daily Cookie visited our spa and received The Classic Men’s Facial & The Geisha Facial®.

Here’s what they said about The Geisha Facial®:

…The overall results I saw with the facial were due to the combination of products used and the care my skin received from Shizuka Bernstein.

Along with the nightingale droppings, Bernstein cleansed my skin with the Shizuka New York Foaming Cleanser and the Clay Cleanser… Additional products used were the Shizuka New York Skin Freshener, Moisturizer, and an amazing-smelling camellia oil. All the products, which are sold in the spa and online, are very gentle and designed to work with almost all skin types. They are formulated with Japanese extracts like pearl protein, green tea, and sake. Usually, my skin feels oily with too much product, but after the facial, I was pleased to find soft and clean skin

and the Classic Men’s Facial:

My dad…came along for the spa’s Men’s Facial. This was his first time trying a treatment like this… but he said that he felt very comfortable during the process. His aesthetician explained all the steps to him and made sure he was aware of what was going to happen. It was fun for me to see him marveling over his skin afterwards, which he said felt like an entirely new layer.

The Daily Beast

When my facialist Satomi Teraoka made it clear—multiple times—that there would be bird poop included in this treatment, I wondered how many people just thought a Geisha Facial seemed pleasant, got in the room, and were greeted with this lovely news. “That’s why I’m here,” I told her, like a poop fiend.

According to the Huffington Post, facial is slowly being popularized by individuals such as Victoria Beckham and Tom Cruise. However, as Japanese facialist Shizuka Bernstein will tell you, the practice has been around for centuries where she comes from.

Geisha Press from The New York Observer

The New York Observer

A recent article in The New York Observer highlights nightingale droppings’ complexion enhancing properties in The Geisha FacialⓇ.

But don’t worry, spa owner Shizuka Bernstein isn’t running after flocks of pigeons hoping she can scrounge up the stuff, she uses Asian nightingale droppings, which contain an enzyme that helps brighten and heal skin.

Ms. Bernstein brought the full service facial to her spa — located at 7 W 51st St. —  five years ago after a discussion with her mother about ancient Japanese skin care techniques used by geishas.

Cosmopolitan.com Reviews The Geisha Facial ®

Cosmopolitan.com

The Geisha Facial ® was reviewed on Cosmopolitan.com! Here’s what associate web editor, Dara, had to say:

When asked why bird poop, Shizuka says, “The bird poop actually has a natural enzyme in it that will cleanse the skin. It also has guanine, which is found in many makeup products that help produce shine.”

After the bird poop part of the facial a few more steps follow, including extraction. Once she was done, my face felt as smooth as a baby’s butt. I think I’d do it again.

Are Bird Poop Facials Dangerous?

A recent article in Australia’s The International Business Times discusses the transmission of possible diseases like the Bird Flu by way of applying bird poop to the face. While The Geisha Facial® uses the Japanese face product, uguisu no fun or Nightingale droppings, our product is sanitized by ultraviolet light before the purified droppings are milled into a fine powder. Most clients say it smells “organic” like cereal or oat bran and is gently soothing when applied to skin.

The owner, Shizuka Bernstein, created The Geisha Facial ® specifically for Shizuka New York Day Spa, using only sterile and safe ingredients. This facial is mild but effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

There are a myriad of harmful bacteria in “raw” bird poop, so we urge you to please be cautious when getting any sort of “bird poop facial” from imitators.
