A recent article in InTouch Weekly claims The Biggest Loser winner, Rachel Frederickson, enlisted the use of a far infrared sauna to melt off those prized pounds before the finale’s final weigh in.
The way this works is the far infrared sauna raises the body’s core temperature which in turn raises the heartbeat and burns calories. Dr. Oz is a big proponent of the infrared sauna heat for weight loss. He explains the weight loss benefits of the far infrared sauna on the Oprah Show.
While our clients use our NYC Far Infrared Sauna for weight loss, they also use it for detox and relaxation as well.
Health benefits of Far Infrared Sauna Heat:
- Speeds up metabolism
- Increases detoxification
- Improves cardiovascular system
- Relieves pain (great for achy muscles, joints)
- Aids in weight loss and removal of cellulite
- Benefits skin (great for acne, eczema, psoriasis, rough skin)
- Strengthens immune system
How Does Far Infrared Sauna Heat Work?
The sauna’s infrared radiation utilizes the same electromagnetic spectrum that’s emitted from the the sun without the UV component. The sauna’s infrared radiation penetrates the skin from 1.5 to 3.5 inches heating blood vessels and capillaries to help release toxins through sweat.
The electromagnetic heat emitted from the far infrared sauna directly heats the user so the sauna’s temperature usually doesn’t rise above 130°F. Reportedly, because infrared radiation therapy heats the body from the inside, 17% more toxins are released into the blood stream than when using a traditional sauna.

India’s newspaper, The Business Standard, reports on the efficacy of Anti-Aging Facials and touts Shizuka new york’s The Geisha Facial® in their article titled: Anti-Aging Facials can Save you from Losing that Youthful Appearance.
“Manhattan’s Shizuka New York Day Spa specializes in the Nightingale facial in which bird droppings, which removes dead cells, are slathered onto a client’s face to give a youthful appearance.”
With a wide range of facials and treatments available to choose from, Shizuka Bernstein advises on the best time to receive an anti-aging facial:
“Basically, anti-aging facials are unnecessary before the age of 25. These treatments are most effective once the skin begins to age, which is generally in someone’s 30′s (depending on their lifestyle, genetics, etc.). With that said, it’s never too late to begin an anti-aging regimen.”

Winter inevitably brings with it the much dreaded cold season.
One physical symptom of the cold that gives away you’re sick (besides a red nose!) is dry dehydrated skin. While we all know it takes time for a cold to subside, there are few things you can do to keep your skin hydrated and healthy while your immune system recovers.
Winter Skin Care Tips for When you Have a Cold
- Cool down: Even though a long hot shower can feel heavenly while the steamy water opens up sinuses and soothes body aches, the hot water can actually strip skin of moisture and dry it out.
- Gently cleanse: Instead of using harsh soaps, instead stick with mild cleansers for sensitive skin. These are usually fragrance-free and gentle on the skin, helping it hold onto its natural oils.
- Act fast: Moisturize skin often, especially after showering. Be sure to moisturize within 5 minutes after showering. Pores are most open at this time making them ready to receive and lock in moisture.
- Protect yourself: Always wear protective clothing to shield exposed skin from the windy dry elements. If skin is left unprotected, flaky itchy skin can develop.
- Regulate the air: Use a humidifier indoors to keep air moist. This will help regulate your skin and sinuses when you come in from the dry air outside.

Setting the Scene, Design Tips for Smaller Spas !
As winter begins, our skin starts to become dry and itchy, and many start to get sore throats and common colds. Check out these tips to prevent and avoid these annoying winter symptoms!
The best percentage of humidity for people is 40%~60%. It’s so important to keep your body hydrated and skin moisturized all year round. Placing a humidifier in your home during the dry winter months can help prevent your skin from becoming overly dry and itchy.
Where to place the humidifier?
Because a humidifier reaches all over the room, it really doesn’t matter where you place it. However, it’s better to keep it away from walls and windows. If it’s too close, mold or mildew may develop from the condensation. What’s important is which heater and which humidifier you actually use.
When you use a humidifier it’s best to place it at least 1 yard away from you so it hydrates you well. Only one humidifier is needed in each room and be sure to close the door. When you’re away from home, turn off the machine and leave the door or window open to let the humidity go.
Which humidifier do you recommend?
-Shizuka loves the Air-O-Swiss Humidifier.
What are other ways to prevent dryness?
It is important to take care of your skin but it’s also important to take preventative measures before your skin gets too dry.
1) Avoid hot water and harsh soaps- Hot water and harsh soaps strip moisture away from your skin. Use a natural wash cloth rather than a synthetic one.
2) Take a bath by soaking the body in warm water. This will soothe nerves and enhance the cell metabolism and increase blood circulation which leads to beautiful skin. Also, it opens up and drains pores. The ideal water temperature should range between 96F to 105F. If the water is too hot it may overburden your body. Bath agents or bath oils are recommended to moisturize your skin and further relax you as well.
3) After taking a bath or shower, pat your body with dry towel quickly and apply moisturizer. It penetrates into the skin when skin is still wet and soft. However, if you leave the skin too long without applying anything, skin gets drier due to water evaporation.

A recent article in Nature World News shares Shizuka’s take on nature’s beauty secrets.
A famous spa chain in Japan made headlines recently when news of the company’s snail facials began to spread. The process, which entails live snails crawling across one’s face, distributing mucus as they go, claims to offer that renewed glow so many spa-goers are desperate for.
Surely, the world thought, this is as weird as it gets. Then came news of the bird poop facial.
According to the Huffington Post, facial is slowly being popularized by individuals such as Victoria Beckham and Tom Cruise. However, as Japanese facialist Shizuka Bernstein will tell you, the practice has been around for centuries where she comes from.

Treatment suggestions: The Geisha Facial® , GentleWaves® LED Facial Rejuvenation, Collagen Mask add on
Since On The Go Mom is likely hopping cabs, catching trains and walking, er running, through the busy city streets, her skin is also susceptible to innumerable free radicals (airborne impurities) in the air. Gift suggestion: VITAMIN C REVITALIZING COMPLEX
Lady of the Manor Mom:
Lady of the Manor Mom usually, quite literally, has her hands full engineering ways to keep the home and family in tip top shape. She’s always coming up with new and better ways to improve productivity and time management. She’s super practical and doesn’t usually have time for some much needed pampering and relaxation.
