Lashful Not Bashful

I’ve lusted after long, luscious lashes my whole life; and just why is it that all too often those gorgeous long thick ones somehow end up on undeserving adolescent boys? What a cruel joke that one is! My own eyelashes aren’t bad; medium length, medium thickness, and with the right mascara and enough of it, they do move up the scale. Though not quite va-va voom level, I can hold my own in a room full of eye-batters. But that still wasn’t enough. I wanted more. I wanted longer, thicker, and fuller and so my quest was on!

I looked into the option of eyelash perming and eyelash tinting and nixed them both. I really don’t care if my lashes are darker if they’re not longer and thicker, and they already have enough curl, thank you very much.

I’ve never liked the look of false eyelashes. That little black faux eyeliner bump always gives them away and too often I’ve seen the glue start to come off on the corners after many hours out on the town. Besides, I could never get used to that feeling of wearing a fur coat on each eye – they made my eyes itch! I decided that individually applied eyelashes were the way to go for dazzling-diva peepers. I’m pretty handy with a beauty tool and tried the do-it-myself route and soon discovered that my talents lie elsewhere. Eyelash extension application is best left to a professional so I went to the Shizuka New York Day Spa where eyelash specialist Kumiko skillfully applied them.

During our consultation, Kumiko explained the process and asked me what look I was going for, which was not too demure, yet not drag queen. She explained that she wouldn’t start too close to the inner corner and we agreed that with the shape of my face and eyes, it was best to put the longest lashes at the outer corners, as opposed to the middle of the eyes. I lied down on a spa table, closed my eyes and she went to work. Her touch was so gentle I almost fell asleep during the 1.5 hours it took to apply approximately 25 lashes to each eye. Each individual eyelash extension is carefully glued onto one of my own. I couldn’t wait for the mirror when she was finished. Hot damn, these look good!  They’re long, silky and gorgeous, yet very real and totally weightless. With proper care, these babies will last until the real lash they’re glued onto falls out, which is approximately two months. Proper care means no excessive hot water and no steam on them and to carefully use eye makeup remover by sweeping it over the eyelid area and avoiding lashes. But here’s the best part: no mascara!  No eyelash curler is needed, either, since these already have a nice curl to them.

It’s been weeks since the process was done and I’m loving it. I adore waking up in the morning with a bright-eyed look and luscious lashes. Upon even the closest inspection, I can’t tell where the false lash is glued onto the real one and I can’t feel them whatsoever. They look totally like my own, only longer and thicker.

Note: This is especially great if you’re a bride or bride’s mom and plan on crying some tears of joy at the wedding. No running mascara worries. Or if you’re the type who simply enjoys waking up in strange beds -you know who you are—it’s nice to know you’ll rise in the AM (or early afternoon) knowing you still look good and are without any mascara smudges!
