Is a lash perm better than using a lash curler? SELF Magazine tries Eyelash Perm
Surprisingly, the process didn’t hurt at all. I thought there would be more pulling on the lashes, but it was incredibly gentle from start to finish.
The curve was really natural looking, and there was not a single lash left behind. Every hair curved up evenly, which is nearly impossible to achieve with just mascara or even a eyelash curler.
My lashes were so curly that it gave the opposite of the lengthening effect I was going for. But if you use an eyelash curler religiously, I’d suggest trying a lash perm to shave time off your morning makeup routine.
SHIZUKA new york Day Spa’s Eyelash Perm is proven to create a lasting curl in the most gentle way possible. Especially if you have straight lashes, you’ll be surprised how much of a difference you can see.
We have 3 options for eyelash treatment. Eyelash Perm, Eyelash Extensions, and Eyelash Tinting. Each treatments are customizable to enhance your eye impression.
If you’re not sure which eyelash treatment is the best for you, we have recommendations per eyelash type: Eyelash Treatment FAQ

Tips from beauty experts for fuller eye lashes
Eyes are one of the big part of your impression.
When we talk with someone, we tend to look at someone’s eyes. Shape of our eyes are all different, and it makes it unique about one. Since we’re looking at it for a long time, it tend to remain as one’s impression.
Here are tips from SHIZUKA new york’s beauty experts for fuller eye lashes!
Take off makeup before bed
Taking off your make up before bed is one of the most important thing to protect your eyes and to keep your eyelashes healthy. It could prevent eye irritation, eye infection, damaging eyelashes, and also bloodshot eyes. It’s better for your skin as well.
Keep your mascara clean
- Change your mascara every 3 to 5 months. Liquid or creamy makeup can harbor bacteria more easily, and mascara is considered as one. Replacing your mascara every 3 to 5 months can help to keep your mascara clean. If its’ dried or if it start to have a strange smell, stop using and get a new one.
- Don’t share. Sharing mascara with friends can transfer bacteria and cause eye infection.
- Don’t pump the mascara wand. It makes it dry out easily.
The most common injury related to cosmetics
Scratching eyes with a mascara wand is the most common injury related to cosmetics. It can lead to an eye infection, eyelash loss, or even blindness. Sometimes you might see someone applying mascara on a train or a car when it’s moving. Maybe she is busy, but this is dangerous.
Try to apply mascara in a relaxing environment in front of a mirror. This way it’s safe, and your eye lashes will look nicer, fuller, and will stay healthier this way.
Tips for Fuller Lashes
An eyelash extension is a synthetic eyelash that is attached to your natural lash using a specialized adhesive. Eyelash Extensions at SHIZUKA new york will add drama to lashes that are thin and light-colored without the need for mascara. Eyelash extensions also carry a slight curl which adds a natural-looking openness to your eyes.

For your face, try our Shizuka New York Skincare system’s moisturizer.

Shizuka New York’s Eyelash Treatments Highlighted in New You Magazine
Shizuka Bernstein and her husband Dr. Robert Bernstein were both recently mentioned and quoted in the article, “A Vision of Youthful Loveliness”, in the Spring edition of New You Magazine. The article discusses how to achieve a more youthful and ‘eye-opening’ look by paying attention to the eyes, brows, and lashes. With the right grooming, the eyes can shave years off of your appearance, even if you’ve been over plucking your brows for years. In this article, you’ll find tips for creating a bold brow and opening up the eye with eyelash perming, extensions, and tinting.
– Go with your natural brow structure to get just the right arch for your face and eyes.
– It’s a two-step process to fill in brows: create definition AND fullness.
– When brow grooming – abstain from waxing or plucking as these methods tend to cause the skin to droop over time.
Dr. Bernstein recommends hair transplantation for those with more severe cases.
“First they have to be trimmed, but eventually they mimic the growth pattern of eyebrows.”
Dr. Olivia Hutchinson, our resident MediSpa doctor is also quoted in the article. Click here for more information about Latisse prescriptions with Dr. Hutchinson.
“Lash perming, which was started in New York by Shizuka Bernstein, who has a spa in Rockefeller Center, adds a flirtatious curl that lasts a month. If you have lighter lashes, tinting and then perming will allow you to skip mascara in your daily routine, and save it for nights out.”

Cultural Differences in Pubic Hair Removal
In a recent article by a Japanese publication WithNews, titled “The Hair Removal Situation in USA: Is it for “Unexpected Happenings” as well as for for Men & the Elderly?, the author describes the differences among Japanese and American people’s tendencies to care for their pubic hair region. The author concludes that the outcome is largely due to overall cultural differences in hair care and grooming.
The article explains that Japanese people tend to not care as much for pubic hair care maintenance as American people. In American drugstores you are more likely to see hair care products and tools such as razors or hair removal creams more than you would in Japan.
Shizuka Bernstein, owner and lead aesthetician of Shizuka new york Day Spa in Manhattan was quoted in the article saying that Americans are culturally more likely to be aware of each others’ body hair just as a cultural consequence of greater everyday physical contact. In this way, it would make more sense that Americans would be more conscious and aware of pubic hair care as well.
“Compared with Japanese people, Many American people have thicker body hair by nature because of the difference of constitution. So the hair removal service is already so commonplace that taking it a step further to cover pubic hair grooming is not a big deal and seems natural.”
The author concludes that there are cultural differences in pubic hair removal. American people tend to be more open-minded when it comes to sex and so it would make sense they would go to greater lengths to care for pubic hair over Japanese people.

Scents of a Geisha: A Natural Way to Heal the Skin
One aspect of the facial that gets newcomers both squirmy and anxious is the smell. Because we all know poop, well, smells. However, because all bacteria has been removed from the bird droppings, what we are left with is its essential enzymes and guanine components which carry a slight ‘earthy’ scent.
Upon creating the facial seven years ago, Shizuka Bernstein, master aesthetician and creator of The Geisha Facial® decided to mix the sterilized bird droppings with rice bran powder to both sweeten its natural scent as well as add additional exfoliating and brightening properties to the facial. Some say the mixture smells like toasted rice or peanut butter. Medical Daily reporter, Susan Scutti, says it smells like ‘honeysuckle’.
Shizuka wanted the facial to be both results-oriented as well as provide a pleasant experience for the customer to unwind and relax knowing their skin is in good hands.
Imagine the scent of honeysuckle complemented with the gentle aroma of camellia flowers, green tea, and lavender oil all derived from the Shizuka NY Skincare System products used throughout the facial. Shizuka created The Geisha Facial® as a natural way to heal the skin while ensuring you feel relaxed and pampered throughout.
As Ms. Scutti remarked in the video, “the smells are part of the peaceful feeling”.
CBS News reveals The Geisha Facial as an Effective Beauty Treatment
An interview with Shizuka Bernstein and one of our clients aired on September 8th, 2015 on a CBS news segment titled: Ugly Beauty.
Sometimes the best ingredients in beauty treatments are sourced directly from mother nature, with results that are much prettier than the ingredients themselves. Natural beauty treatments that use all-natural ingredients like sterilized bird droppings bring added benefits to your skin that synthetic products may not be able to deliver. For example, the naturally occurring enzymes in guanine (main ingredient in bird droppings) retexturizes skin to impart a pearly luster.
Here’s a portion of the transcript from the CBS News segment:
Manhattan spa owner Shizuka Bernstein created a facial using nightingale droppings.
“I really do swear by it,” she said.
Client Amanda Hoffman said the bird poop, which was allegedly first used hundreds of years ago to cleanse the skin of Geisha, has made a world of difference in her skin.
The droppings are UV sterilized which produces a powder form of the ingredient mixed with rice bran to help with the smell. Clients said the results are immediate.
“So you must wonder, ‘ok, what will it do for the skin?’” she said.
Experts say longevity is key when seeking out ugly beauty products.
“Fads will come and go, but if it’s been out there for six to eight months I think it’s pretty safe to try,” Dr. Kavita Mariwalla said.
The Geisha Facial® has been around for seven years, since 2008, so we’d say it’s more than a fad, it’s a tried and true beauty treatment!

Tips to keep your lashes looking perfect longer
Consult a Professional
Get a professional consultation before getting eyelash extensions affixed to your natural lashes. You want to make sure you get the best look for your buck! Let Kim Kardashian have her own look, let’s find you yours! By assessing the condition of your natural lashes, a licensed esthetician will help you decide on the best curl and length for your ultimate beauty enhancement.
Keep Lashes Dry
Eyelash glue can take up to two days to firmly bond to your natural lashes so avoid getting them wet as much as possible. Be sure to protect them while showering and washing your face and completely avoid activities like swimming and those that involve excessive sweating like using saunas and working out. If you go in the water, wear goggles to protect those lashes.
Gently Remove Makeup
Use makeup removal wipes to gently remove makeup from the eye area. Avoid using cotton balls or pads as cotton fibers can get stuck in lashes and make them fall out sooner. A little extra care everyday can extend the life of your lashes in the long run.
Most mascaras will interfere with eyelash glue lessening their bond to the eyelash extension. Mascara, especially oil-based ones, can be difficult to remove which can further weaken and limit the life of the eyelash extension. Added benefits of getting eyelash extensions include giving mascara and eyelash curlers some time off. Enjoy it!
Reset and go!
You’re bound to get eyelashes wet in the shower or after cleansing your face. When this happens simply reset them by combing them gently with an eyelash comb and blow dry them with a hairdryer set on its coolest setting. Using hot air will further weaken the eyelash extension adhesive.
Sleep on your back
Sleeping on your stomach or on your side can cause eyelash extensions to bend awkwardly throughout the night making them difficult to deal with in the morning. In order to protect lashes during slumbering hours, sleep on your back instead.

Shizuka New York in American Spa Magazine
Shizuka New York Day Spa is mentioned in American Spa Magazine’s May 2015 issue!
The Geisha Facial® is still getting media buzz, almost as much as it did when Shizuka New York Day Spa owner, Shizuka Bernstein, introduced the facial to the beauty and spa industry in 2008.
According to owner and celebrity facialist Shizuka Bernstein, geishas relied on frequent facials using nightingale droppings to not only remove makeup but also to brighten and heal their skin. She attributes the ingredient’s natural enzymes and guanine to helping impart a pearly luster to the skin.
In the article, spa consultant Peter Anderson speaks to how the origin of The Geisha Facial stems from ancient Japanese culture and how “that predates a modern understanding of skincare”.
Many of these facials have their roots in culture and chemistry that predates a modern understanding of skincare.
The usage of nightingale droppings in The Geisha Facial isn’t the facial’s only element with ancient Japanese origins. A recent article on Vogue.com highlights an ancient Japanese skincare technique known as double-cleansing. The Geisha Facial (and all other SNY facials) incorporates double-cleansing using the all-natural products from the Shizuka New York Skincare System to thoroughly cleanse and refresh the skin before the nightingale droppings are applied. This technique maximizes the “Geisha Glow” effect following the facial.
How to Get Smooth Skin while Beating Cellulite
A recent article in The Hindustan Times mentions our Geisha Facial in an article about celebrity beauty secrets titled: Bird poop and leeches to mayonnaise: 17 bizarre celeb beauty secrets.
While The Geisha Facial is an all-natural way to cleanse the skin, the enzymes in the nightingale droppings work to also gently exfoliate and nourish the skin producing smooth glowing results. Just look at Victoria Beckham!
Victoria Beckham loves a good bird poop facial
Bird poo? No, seriously! The Daily Mail reports that the former pop star’s glossy skin is all about bird poop and smearing it on her face. Also known as the Geisha facial, it is an ancient Japanese beauty practice that uses nightingale droppings to form a cleansing paste. Sounds gross, but it works. What’s more, celebrities (including Posh’s hubby David Beckham) are all about it today as it leaves the skin super shiny and smooth.
Further down the list notes that Halle Berry uses coffee grounds to deeply cleanse and smooth her skin. Coffee grounds is also a natural way to beat cellulite. Halle Berry proves our Coffee Break Mud Wrap is a tried and true way to achieve smooth vibrant skin!
