Shizuka New York’s Eyelash Treatments Highlighted in New You Magazine
Shizuka Bernstein and her husband Dr. Robert Bernstein were both recently mentioned and quoted in the article, “A Vision of Youthful Loveliness”, in the Spring edition of New You Magazine. The article discusses how to achieve a more youthful and ‘eye-opening’ look by paying attention to the eyes, brows, and lashes. With the right grooming, the eyes can shave years off of your appearance, even if you’ve been over plucking your brows for years. In this article, you’ll find tips for creating a bold brow and opening up the eye with eyelash perming, extensions, and tinting.
Tips include:
– Go with your natural brow structure to get just the right arch for your face and eyes.
– It’s a two-step process to fill in brows: create definition AND fullness.
– When brow grooming – abstain from waxing or plucking as these methods tend to cause the skin to droop over time.
Dr. Bernstein recommends hair transplantation for those with more severe cases.
“First they have to be trimmed, but eventually they mimic the growth pattern of eyebrows.”
Dr. Olivia Hutchinson, our resident MediSpa doctor is also quoted in the article. Click here for more information about Latisse prescriptions with Dr. Hutchinson.
“Lash perming, which was started in New York by Shizuka Bernstein, who has a spa in Rockefeller Center, adds a flirtatious curl that lasts a month. If you have lighter lashes, tinting and then perming will allow you to skip mascara in your daily routine, and save it for nights out.”

A common skincare mistake is treating dry and dehydrated skin the same way. Each has a different cause therefore requires its own skincare regimen. Applying the wrong regimen could further harm skin potentially leading it to age prematurely. Read on for tips on how to tell if your skin is dry or dehydrated and what to do about it.
What is dry skin?
Dry skin is a skin type whose cause is not entirely clear. Sometimes the cause of dry skin is genetics while other times it’s the product of hormonal changes in the body. Whatever the reason, spotting dry skin is relatively easy. Dry skin is characterized by lack of natural oils, or sebum, that are present in normal skin types. Dry skin will look rough and scaly and may also be sensitive or inflamed. Also, wrinkles or fine lines can look more pronounced.
It’s a misconception that completely oil free skin is healthy. A thin layer of sebum is necessary to protect skin and keep it hydrated. Harsh cleansers and bath sponges actually strip the skin of the natural oils needed to keep moisture sealed in. These natural oils also fight against free-radicals in the environment that can damage and cause the skin to age over time. As natural oils decrease skin becomes more sensitive and inflamed leading to collagen break down.
Dry skin solutions:
Choose moisturizers that are rich in natural oils and butters.
Use a cleanser that’s creamy. It will most likely contain niacinamides and ceramides which help retain natural oils and not strip them away.
Avoid bar soaps and harsh cleansers and use hands or a soft washcloth over sponges to cleanse your body.
Follow up facial cleansing with a toner to balance pH levels, followed with a nutrient rich moisturizer.
Partake in oil-based anti-aging facial massages like the one incorporated into The Geisha Facial®
Dehydrated skin is a skin condition that’s temporary. Cold weather and illness can easily prompt skin to become dehydrated as well as not drinking enough water. Dehydrated skin is tight and flaky and appear dull and tired.
In a nutshell, dehydrated skin means that your skin lacks water. When the weather is cold skin can easily become dehydrated since the cold air zaps water from the skin. Dehydrated skin is easier to treat than dry skin since dry skin is a skin type that needs to be cared for constantly. Dehydrated skin can come and go. The first step to alleviating dehydrated skin is to..well..hydrate! Drinking enough water is the first step to quell your skin’s thirst for moisture. Remember biology class? The cells in your skin need water to fill out and when they do your skin will appear plumper and more supple.
Dehydrated skin solutions:
Drink more water and incorporate more water-based foods such as fruits and vegetables into your diet.
Apply a moisturizer immediately after washing your skin. It will lock in moisture and will reconstitute dehydrated skin throughout the night while you sleep.
Use a humidifier to surround your skin with moisture as you sleep.
Journalist and media outlets have variously described the Geisha Facial as a craze, hyped, really weird, and definitely bizarre while the young, rich and beautiful have raved about it, touting its all natural properties (Tom Cruse) and talking about how much they love it (Posh Spice & David Beckham) — and all this has been in the last 7 years, going back to when ShizukaNY introduced the Geisha Facial to New Yorkers back in 2008.
Today, 7 years later, the Geisha Facial is still attracting positive attention and testimonials — check out these recent mentions from around the web:
Simon Hill, the assistant editor for The Knot, a one-stop online wedding planning site, had this to say about her unique experience with the infamous ‘bird poop’ facial:
As far as beauty treatments go, putting bird poop on your face is as pretty strange as it gets, but it’s really not as bizarre as you might think . . . afterwards my face felt clean and had a nice glow to it . . . what really stood out to me was how gentle the facial was. All of the products used are all-natural which is great if you have sensitive skin or prefer to avoid chemicals.
Latest Web Mention Touts the Geisha (Bird Poop) Facial As Just The Thing To Make You Wedding Ready!
The OMGSkinCare.com site adds a new superlative to the list of adjectives journalists and bloggers have used to describe the Geisha Facial – insane:
Perhaps the best known aspect of the geisha is her white pancake makeup, which was once lead-based and ravaged the skin. To restore their appearance, the geisha used a cream made from the droppings of nightingales, which contained revitalizing enzymes . . . customers have reported a “glow” on their face after the treatment.
Finally, both TreatNowBlog.com and Metro.us, drawing on a list of previously used adjectives – weird and bizarre respectively – also brought to the attention of their audiences the benefits of the Geisha Facial:
The story goes that in the past Japanese Geisha’s used a cream derived of Nightingale dropping to revitalise their skin after a day wearing harmful lead based make-up. The dropping are said to contain beneficial enzymes that help heal and brighten the skin. Today, the Shizuka Day Spa in New York [has] brought this ancient treatment into the 21st century in the form of a facial.
The Geisha Facial at Shizuka New York Day Spa cleanses and rejuvenates the skin with a little help from some bird poop (nightingale droppings, to be precise). The treatment wraps up with an antioxidant green tea collagen masque. When all is said and done, [Shizuka New York Day Spa] says the glow the bird poop leaves behind is well worth it.
Have you wondered why spa facials leave you feeling better afterwards? Aside from giving you a youthful complexion, a spa facial actually enhances your body’s wellness by increasing immune system functioning. There are a few components of an anti-aging facial that will actually help relieve allergy symptoms like nasal congestion and drain toxins from the face and body.
SNY’s award winning Lifting facial was voted best facial by NY Magazine and most recently awarded Best Facial Massage hot spot by Style.com. The popular anti-aging facial uses microcurrent technology to stimulate and tone facial muscles. Shizuka comments on the correlation between the technology and allergy relief: “We don’t guarantee that the Lifting Facial’s microcurrent technology will clear sinuses, but it can definitely be a side effect as the microcurrents work to rejuvenate tissues in the face.
While medication can bring instant relief, try complimenting your allergy relief routine with this award winning anti-aging facial which includes these three additional sinusitis relieving components:
Facial Massage
A spa facial will almost always include a facial massage which stimulates muscles to promote collagen production which simultaneously drains fluids from the face to decrease puffiness. A facial massage generally includes applying gentle pressure to the areas around the nose, forehead, and cheeks to ease muscle strain and provide significant relief from nasal congestion. For sinusitis sufferers, a facial massage breaks up the mucus that collects in nasal cavities thereby increasing blood circulation and allowing for headache relief from pressure build up. This also opens up passageways and is very relaxing and all-natural.
Steam can be a powerful aid in allergy relief. During the Lifting Facial a steam machine in placed near the face to open pores to prepare them for extraction. Slowly inhaling the steam opens up passageways allowing fluids to drain from sinuses naturally.
Lymph drainage
The Lifting Facial provides lymph drainage which allows the release of any toxin buildup in the lymph nodes that have collected over time. The lymph system drains the body of excess fluids but sometimes these fluids pick up allergens that don’t respond well to the immune system. Draining lymph nodes manually boosts immune system functioning by stimulating the flow of lymphatic fluid and draining out harmful toxins.
The dual nature of the Lifting Facial as an anti-aging treatment and an immune booster will leave you looking and feeling your best! Check out what this award-winning facial can do for you!
Shizuka new york Day Spa’s The Lifting Facial, voted Best Facial NYCby New York Magazine is featured on Style.com’s Beauty Counter as one of the ‘Best Facial Hot Spots’ in New York City!
Even leading make-up artists insist on facial massages before applying make up to stimulate collagen production and wake up facial muscles to lift and firm skin. See what Style.com writes about Shizuka Bernstein’s The Lifting Facial:
The Service: The Lifting Facial
The Pain Is Worth the Gain: “This treatment gently stimulates and tones muscles while oxygenating the skin for a more rejuvenated appearance,” says Shizuka Bernstein. “And in addition to manual massage, we use a microcurrent machine to further stimulate the facial muscles. Its ionization helps products to penetrate farther into the skin. We use ingredients like algae and a collagen fiber mask with green tea. Pore extraction and light massage complete the treatment.”

It’s the perfect time to rethink your bedtime routine for a more restful and naturally beautifying sleep. While you sleep, your skin is actually undergoing a deep restorative process, expediting the skin’s natural healing and rejuvenating process. When you’re sleep deprived you’re more likely to wake up with under eye bags or a tired complexion. So the more restful your repose, the better the morning will be for you AND your skin!
Here are some tips to help promote a more restful (& beautifying) slumber:
Light an aromatherapy candle at least 30 minutes prior to bedtime. This will ensure the essential oils have enough time to warm and permeate the air. Let the soothing scents guide you to dreamland.
Lavender is a popular aromatherapy scent due to its calming and soothing properties. Mist your face, pillow, and/or eye mask with a lavender mist before going to bed.
For a dull or tired complexion try using nighttime serums to promote cellular renewal:
Apply Shizuka New York’s Nighttime Anti-Aging Repair 1 & 2 to clean skin on alternating days. These products work together to even out skin tone and texture while targeting fine lines and wrinkles.
Anti-Aging Night Repair 1 contains retinol and Vitamin C to retexturize and brighten skin while you sleep.
Anti-Aging Night Repair 2 contains a powerful blast of vitamins, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid to smooth, plump, and firm skin.
When the seasons change, so should your skin care routine. For example, during the fall and winter months, the air is very dry so your skin craves extra hydration. Naturopathica’s Plant Stem Cell Serum works with the change in seasons to jump start and enhance the skin’s firming and hydrating properties.
This signature product of the Natural Face Lift Facial* utilizes potent anti-aging components of these 100% natural ingredients to treat premature aging, inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, and sagging skin:

Hi-tech facials are results-driven treatments, incorporating modern technology with deep cleansing refreshment.

Veria Living TV has a new show: Naturally Beautiful with host Nitika Chopra!

Some find freckles, sun or angel kisses, cute, and some annoying. But what are they?
Freckles are a grouping of melanin pigment that forms on the outer most layer of the skin to protect deeper layers from excessive sun damage. Since freckles are part of the skin’s protective functioning, it’s privy for anyone susceptible to these mighty little “kisses” to work with the skin and always wear sunscreen and resort to other protective measures.
Freckles usually form on the places exposed to direct sunlight: face, arms, shoulders and neck. If you “freckle” it’s a sure sign your skin is sensitive to sun exposure so it’s a good idea to limit exposure to harmful UV rays by covering up and using sunscreen. This will limit further “freckling”, prolonged sun damage, and possibly even melanoma. And plus, your skin will look and feel healthier.
If you’re looking to even out your complexion, here are some ways to care for freckled skin:
Brightening creams and cleansers. These products contain brightening agents that will even out skin tone creating a brighter complexion. Be sure to follow directions when using these products and always wear sunscreen when outside, as your skin will be even more susceptible to UV-damage.
Laser/IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments. These treatments will lighten or remove dark spots entirely. Depending on your skin’s condition, several treatments may be necessary.
Chemical Peels. Chemical peels strip you of your outer most layer of skin, allowing for newer healthier skin to grow in. This will reduce the appearance of freckles and age spots.
More sun-damage prevention tips:
Take cover with an umbrella, hat, scarf, and protective clothing. Avoid scorching sun rays between 10a – 4p.
Look for “broad-spectrum” sun screens that will protect your skin from both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, while UVB rays are shorter and cause sunburns. Look for sunscreen with SPF of at least 15, although sunscreen SPF of 30 or more is ideal. If you’re at higher elevations use higher SPF.
Apply sunscreen liberally 30 minutes before stepping outdoors, and continue to reapply every 2 hours.
If you have moles, make it a regular habit to visit a dermatologist at least once a year for a check-up.
The use of tanning beds can significantly increase your skin’s need to freckle, not to mention increase your risk for melanoma. If you really need a tan, try using self tanning creams or sprays instead.
If you have sensitive skin and want to stay away from chemical-based products, look for chem-free products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients help to block UV rays from penetrating the skin’s surface. They aren’t absorbed into the skin like regular sunscreens so are nonallergenic and nonirritating and won’t aggravate acne.
If acne is a concern, Shizuka suggests staying away from powder mineral make-up. “I’ve seen so many clients who use the product come in with acne, I suspect the oil from the minerals or the applicator brush is clogging pores.” An unwashed brush transfers bacteria back and forth from the powder to the skin, which further contributes to clogged pores. For oily and congested skin, be sure to wash your face (& make-up brushes!) as soon as possible.
As your wedding day draws nearer, the last thing you want to be stressing over is your skin. It’s always a good idea to get a head start on a season-specific regimen (in this case: summer!) that will leave your skin smooth and glowing on your big day.
Shizuka’s Suggestions to Summer Bridal Beauty
For summer brides, the best skin care regimen includes a deep cleansing facial cleanser, toner, and a an oil-free moisturizer. While the deep cleanser helps keep your pores flushed, the toner will replace the healthy fatty acids and antioxidants that may have been stripped from the cleansing. An oil-free moisturizer will seal in hydration without clogging pores which is especially important during the summer.
Wedding planning brings about a lot of stress, and stress, unfortunately, also leads to premature aging. To keep fine lines at bay, be sure to use an antioxidant rich serum to help boost collagen production. In addition, serums also work to help plump and hydrate dry skin.
As you get closer to the big day, be sure to exfoliate regularly. Exfoliation will slough away the dead skin cells and any bacteria that lead to acne break outs. It also helps to smooth and even your complexion. Always follow exfoliation with a deeply hydrating serum, cream, or mask.
All those nerves may make it difficult to get a good amount of “beauty rest” right before the wedding day, so I recommend applying a cold compress to the eyes to help reduce puffiness in the morning. Use chilled green tea bags for a quick and easy way to sooth puffy eyes in a flash.

A recent article in Australia’s The International Business Times discusses the transmission of possible diseases like the Bird Flu by way of applying bird poop to the face. While The Geisha Facial® uses the Japanese face product, uguisu no fun or Nightingale droppings, our product is sanitized by ultraviolet light before the purified droppings are milled into a fine powder. Most clients say it smells “organic” like cereal or oat bran and is gently soothing when applied to skin.
The owner, Shizuka Bernstein, created The Geisha Facial ® specifically for Shizuka New York Day Spa, using only sterile and safe ingredients. This facial is mild but effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
There are a myriad of harmful bacteria in “raw” bird poop, so we urge you to please be cautious when getting any sort of “bird poop facial” from imitators.
We have a wide variety of treatments and gifts sure to please every type of mom this Mother’s Day. Check out the following Mother’s Day Spa Guide to find out which treatments and gifts are the best fit for your Mom!
Executive Mom:
The executive mom is usually always busy with work. When she’s not cooking dinner or going to soccer practice, she’s glued to her Smartphone to keep in touch with the office. She’s perpetually busy but loves it when she’s finally able to RELAX, even if it’s just for a couple hours.
Our Coffee Break Mud Wrap combines soothing heat therapy with refreshing exfoliation and detoxification. Our “Mud” mixture will reinvigorate the senses with sweet earthy aromas of Arabica Coffee, honey, and bergamot, among others. Combine this with an 80min Shiatsu or Swedish massage and Mom will leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to go!
On The Go Mom is usually busy as a bee, with a daily mile long to-do list. She loves getting things done, and try as she might, finding time for herself just isn’t a top priority most of the time.
Since On The Go Mom is likely hopping cabs, catching trains and walking, er running, through the busy city streets, her skin is also susceptible to innumerable free radicals (airborne impurities) in the air. Over time this can age the skin, so we suggest treatments such as The Geisha Facial ®, Gentle Waves treatment, or even adding on a collagen mask to any of our facials to stimulate collagen production, encourage cellular renewal and shrink pores.
Lady of the Manor Mom usually, quite literally, has her hands full engineering ways to keep the home and family in tip top shape. She’s always coming up with new and better ways to improve productivity and time management. She’s super practical and doesn’t usually have time for some much needed pampering and relaxation.
Our Signature Micro Facial is our most popular facial with the most pampering. This facial combines deep cleansing with face, scalp, hand and shoulder massage, as well as reflexology treatment (foot massage). Combine this facial with an Eyelash Perm and nails, and Mom will feel like a Queen!
The health-conscious Mom loves to feed herself with all-natural foods and products like fresh juices, whole-grain breads, organic vegetables, and prefers using paraben-free facial washes and soaps. She wants to stay as healthy as possible, especially in a big (dirty) city like NYC.
The Nagomi Manicure and Sakura Pedicure are SNY’s signature nail treatments using only natural ingredients free of harsh chemicals and additives that are mixed right in front of you. Ingredients include fresh lemon, olive oil, soy, rice, and sake to exfoliate, hydrate and protect the skin and nails. Combine this with the Far Infrared Sauna and The Natural Face Lift Facial which uses Naturopathica’s high-performance, all natural and paraben-free products. These treatments will leave Mom feeling well-balanced and glowing!
Shizuka gives tips to Fox News Magazine for Spring Cleaning For Your Skin!
Shizuka’s Tips
Exfoliate
Unveiling brighter skin from underneath layers of dead cells and oil helps achieve a softer, more youthful complexion. Shizuka Bernstein, a New York City-based aesthetician offers the following guide to eliminating dry, dead skin from the harsh winter:
Cleanse your skin twice with your cleanser and lukewarm water.
Apply a hot towel on your face and leave it on for a while to open the pores and soften the skin. Repeat the same action with another hot towel.
If you have a good enzyme based exfoliator at home, use that. If not, mix lemon juice, honey and rosehip seed powder. Apply the mix to your face and massage gently for three to five minutes.
Rinse off it lukewarm water.
Moisturize your skin with your own moisturizer and eye cream.

The First Lady Michelle Obama showed up for inaugural weekend sporting a new flirty hair style with bangs. The Daily Beast reported that Ms. Obama jokingly responded the bangs were a result of a ‘midlife crises’. Scrutinizing beauty experts were left wondering what other beauty-related lengths women will go to during a midlife crises.
But as far as these experts are concerned, bangs just scream beauty:
John Barrett, founder of the Bergdorf Goodman salon says, “If done correctly, [sporting bangs or deciding to add color] can shave years off of a woman’s appearance.”
This facial was created by Shizuka to not only promote collagen production, but also brighten complexion and offer deep cleansing and moisturizing using only chemical-free ingredients. Nightingale droppings, a natural enzyme, have been used for centuries in Japan for flawless complexions. Please note, our ingredients are completely bacteria-free! You can sample the Geisha Facial by adding a “Geisha Exfoliation” to any Shizuka new york Day Spa facial for an additional $40. Call or email us for more information!
